Supporting healing, education & transparency to end Mormon sexual shame.
Sexcommunication.net is a site dedicated to bringing light, transparency and healing to the many people who have suffered unnecessary and inappropriate shame within the context of Mormonism and other religious circles.
A lot of attention was brought to this issue during the excommunication process of Natasha Helfer, LCMFT, CST, CST-S, a prominent sex therapist & educator within the Mormon community in April of 2021. She was disciplined due to her support and advocacy work for sexual health principles supported by the medical and social science communities. Many people wrote letters of support, where they included stories of how sexual shaming beliefs and practices within Mormonism impacted their lives. We want to share these stories as a witness of the necessary change that needs to happen so that Latter-day Saints and others can experience better relationships with themselves, their sexual partners, their children and the community at large.
This site also provides the documentation and resources Natasha created during the process of her membership trial.
Mormon Sexual Shame Stories
We are taking the many stories that have been shared in support of having the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints adopt healthier views and policies towards sexuality, and making them available to you. You can see these in the link here.
Clinical Letter
Leading up to the Natasha Helfer’s membership council many LDS professionals came together to write a letter of support. This letter clearly states the concerns many mental and sexual health clinicians have when a religious entity interferes with or “disciplines” those who are following evidence-based and best practice approaches with their clients/patients. The Professional Letter is considered “live” and can be signed by mental health practitioners who want to add their names.
Disciplinary Documentation
In April, 2021, Natasha Helfer received a summons for disciplinary action via the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Click the link below to see the timeline of the events leading up to this disciplinary council.
”Mormon” is a term that can be used in a variety of ways. For many it means being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For others it means having once belonged to the Church, but no longer associating with the religion. For yet others it can mean being part of or having grown up in any of the restoration traditions dating back to Joseph Smith. Regardless, all Mormons have in one way or another been shaped by teachings regarding sexuality, primarily referred to as the “Law of Chastity.”
This site is not affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
